Whilst I was away this donkey came in with very 'odd ' skin. Just in the area where the harness sits. At first we couldn't understand what was wrong with the skin, and then a large part (as seen in the photo) started to slough off, and eventually came away, leaving a large open wound as seen in the picture. We concluded that the harness was putting so much pressure on the back of this poor donkey that it occluded the blood supply, causing the skin to die (pressure necrosis).
Treatment from now on is wound management, and we are hoping to do some skin grafts on the wound in the later stages of healing.
